The castle of Modave and the city of Huy

an interesting and well organized visit

The castle of Modave is undoubtedly one of the major heritage sites of Wallonia and famous for its rich history, it’s architecture, its decorations (stuccowork, carved panelling, tapestries and furniture), its gardens and, certainly not to forget , its stunning natural surroundings. From the recently restored terrace of the castle all participants enjoyed the overwhelming and spectacular view on the valley of the Hoyoux river (60m below) and the surrounding nature reserve.

Through his exciting stories our guide evoked the lives of the different owners, among which the Count de Marchin, to whom the castle owes its present appearance.

After a tasteful lunch in a restaurant along the river Meuse, a passionate historian guided us through the historic district of Huy’s old town and gave us ample time to discover the most important highlights of this millennial Mosan town, such as the Notre Dame Collegiate church and its treasury, the town hall, the Grande Place, the Place Verte etc.

Many thanks to Emile who gave us a most pleasant and interesting day during which I had the pleasure to wish him a very happy birthday, on behalf of all participants. I am sure he celebrated this special day in a more relaxed atmosphere afterwards…
