The Restoration of the National Trust’s Historic Garden – A lecture by Richard Wheeler

Those members who took part in last year’s UK Trip will remember the fascinating explanations given by the National Trust’s specialist in Garden History, Richard Wheeler, as he guided us round Stowe landscaped park.
Our February event provides an opportunity for all of us to learn more about the Trust’s gardens, and to talk to Richard after the lecture. Richard Wheelers talk will look at the restoration of National Trust gardens over the last 40 years. It will also show the progress over the centuries, beginning with the Medieval and Renaissance, moving to the development of the English Landscape garden in the 18C, and finally to the 20C with the magical gardens of Vita Sackville-West and Lawrence Johnston.

The talk will be liberally illustrated with photos of Trust gardens, and will include references to many we have visited in recent years as well as those we are planning to see in 2015.
After the lecture drinks will be served.

By car:
coming from Brussels: follow Zoniënwoudlaan / Av. de la Fôret deSoignes, pass under railway bridge and turn right into Stationsstraat / Rue de la Station. Then take third street on right, the Toekomstlaan. Take third right after about 150 m. and the Boesdaalhoeve entrance is on your right.
By train:
line Brussels-Nivelles-Charleroi to St-Genesius-Rhode / Rhode-St.Genèse,
Go down the stairs, under the railway onto the Stationsplein. Pass the station and follow downhill, the Boomkwekerijstraat.
Walk round the right-handed bend, then take the first street left (Teeltlaan).
At the top of a rather steep climb go right and then take the stairs on the left to arrive in front of the Boesdaalhoeve.
20 mins walk.
