The cosmopolitan character of Antwerp through the centuries

Over the course of the 19th century the development of the port of Antwerp attracted a sizeable number of Germans to the city. Many were involved in banking, shipping and commerce and made a valuable contribution towards the rapid growth of the port and development of international networks.
Well integrated into Belgian society whilst holding on their German identity, the community was well catered for with German schools, hospitals, clubs, shops, bars and restaurants.
The presentation will be held in the former gymnasium of the German community, now home to the ELD architectural practice. The senior partner, Philip Verplancke will talk to us about the presence of the 19th German community in Antwerp and specifically in the area around the ELD building.

After lunch we shall continue to the Antwerp Town Hall, completed in 1565 but reduced to ashes two years later and rebuilt and restored many times since. After a presentation by Committee Member Ludo Somers we shall visit a temporary exhibition in the lower part of the building describing the building’s 450 year chequered history and enjoy the views of the fine market square.
Afterwards we can explore the State Staircase up to the most famous “Schoon Verdiep” with its spectacular views of the 19th century glass dome, see the impressive corridors and perhaps be tempted to enjoy a drink in the “Long Gallery”.

From Brussels by car follow E19 through the Craeybecktunnel. Turn left N177 into Jan Van Rijswicklaan, after 0.2 km turn right into Lange Loozanastraat, after 0.8 km turn right into Vinckenstraat and after about 0.1 km into J. Blockxstraat.
By train: to Antwerpen Central and then tram to HARMONIE or GOUNOD.
