Is the National Trust "Disneyfying" its properties?

The National Trust is often seen as a rather staid and conservative organisation but over the last year this image seems to be changing. January's Newsletter described how the Trust had taken on the UK Government by campaigning against changes to the planning laws. While we do not yet know the outcome, it seems that the Government may be prepared to listen. So it should!

The National Trust is Europe’s biggest conservation body. It manages, conserves and gives public access to 1,141 kilometres of coastline, 255,000 hectares of land – much of which is of outstanding natural beauty – and more than 350 historic houses, gardens and parks, ancient monuments and nature reserves. Yet, the NT is independent of government aid, receiving no direct state funding!

The National Trust is a charity that exists to promote the preservation of historic interest and natural beauty for the benefit of the nation. That is the NT’s founding statute.

And indeed, for more than a century the Trust has spoken out against building projects or other schemes that menace its properties.
